My late father referred to himself as a ”card carrying Republican” and after talking with him extensively about it before his passing… i understand why he was. The GOP was different in the late 70’s and early 80’s. It was still in the beginning stages of what it has currently become. He told me that years of political back and forth and Democratic policies had sucked all the pride out of being an American. He didn’t care about politics or who was the President. Then came Ronald Reagan. He brought a sense of purpose and vision back to this country and regardless of what he did while he was in office… he connected with the working class, and my father liked that about him.
Things change.
For years now I, and countless others, have been attempting to warn our fellow countrymen that the people running the Republican Party right now are not who they want you to think they are. This ain’t my Dad’s GOP, and it hasn’t been for some time. The Neo-Republican charlatans currently in control have only one thing on their mind — amassing wealth and political/global power (in order to amass even more wealth). Everything else is just theater, and secondary to those goals. Period.
So how have they managed to keep so many — including rank and file Republicans — believing they have the best interest of the country at heart, even as they proceed, step by step, to demolish the middle class, with their “smash and dash” economic policies?
Hmmm lets see… lies, deception, smears, meaningless distractions (lapel pins. pigs with lipstick), phony catch phrases (McCain’s campaign slogan “Country First”), war, terrorism, fear, the dreaded “S” word (socialism) … basically anything they can come up with to keep YOU THE VOTER from focusing on what truly matters to the future of this country, or your own personal well being.
They’ve become a party dominated by a Dobson/Robertson/Hagee brand of religious extremism (working feverishly to bring about the end of the world and the Rapture), and those who are so overcome by a compulsive need to have it all — and I mean all — that it entirely overwhelms any sense of personal integrity and societal responsibility, making them completely antithetical to a democratic republic.
I have always said that I will never vote for a Republican candidate for President, and I don’t know if that will ever change. Id like to though, and I REALLY mean that. Id really enjoy seeing a smart, young, vibrant person in the GOP that would break all the molds and binds that has bogged down the party for so long. A moderate Republican who doesn’t have an hidden agenda or spews completely idiotic statements just for the sake of hearing themselves talk. Id like to be able to remember my father and believe in a Republican who actually has MY interests in mind, instead of right wing fundamentalists with a moral objection to the way people lead their lives. Someone who isn’t afraid of pissing off the evangelical base of the GOP. Someone who can CONNECT with me and other people on a level where we actually believe them and WANT to vote for them, instead of just being the “lesser of two evils” as they call it.
Why hasn’t a person like this stepped up to the plate? Does the GOP SERIOUSLY think that anyone with half a brain connects with Sarah Palin? Is she the BEST they can do to try and get my attention and more importantly… my vote? I don’t want to be out right mean, but EVERY SINGLE PERSON Ive talked to or heard talk about Sarah Palin in a positive light seems like a complete and utter moron. It seems disingenuous and I don’t believe for a second that ANYONE really thinks shes the right person for the job.
Im trying Dad… but this is what they are giving me, and Im certain that if you were still alive, this FUCKING JOKE that the Republicans are trying to pull would make you sick and ashamed and you would throw that card away for good.
Well… at least for a couple of elections.

Wow. Very well written. My parents, unfortunately, are the very people you speak of. They think OBAMA is going to be the Socialist. They go to a church… Matthew and I were obligated to visit it with them once and will never go back… because it seriously felt like I was on one of those TV evengelist shows. My Mother follows BENNY HINN of all people. They act like every election is going to determine just how soon Armegeddon will take place.
My sister and I both have voted Republican in the past because we felt like it was what we were expected to do, lest we let our parents down. I admit, I voted for Bush in the last election… and so did she. This time around, my sister and I are the first members of our family (well us and our 18 year old nephew who is thinking for himself and we’re proud of him for doing it sooner than we did). We’ve both voted already and we both voted for Obama and we are both proud of it. Yet at the same time we’re bracing ourselves for heated discussions over the holidays when the rest of the family finds out who we voted for.
I’m not really going anywhere with this but just sharing my thoughts. Well written Danny Stinky Feet Anus. Well written.

Dude! Why do you insist on poking me with a stick. I try to just look the other and let people believe what they want, but dude you leave little choice. Like for starters since when are the people that want less taxes and less government involvement in peoples lives the ones trying to destroy the middle class. It’s their bread and butter. I guess it was the Republicans that gave us Welfare, Social Security, Affirmative Action, Rampant taxes on cigarettes, alcohol and gasoline. the companies that provide said goods make about 1-5% profit. Now you tell me who’s driving up cost. So it’s not the Democrats that have constantly pushed retarded social programs that take taxpayer money to create jobs instead of cutting taxes and putting more money in peoples pockets which makes more jobs on it’s own. And as to the religious FANTATICS that want to bring on the rapture. Now that’s the real poison in this country that needs stamping out. Not radical eco groups animal rights people that sit crying in front of trees or posting graphic pictures of animals mistreated, but believe abortion is ok. Come on. Now before your ears start shooting steam. This is not about John Mccain, George Bush, Sarah Palin this about subjectivity. So anus where’s your expose on the Democratic Party for being equal if not bigger frauds than the big evil sweaty Republicans.

Do you honestly feel the goals of the Democratic Party are any different? I mean I truly believe there are individuals in each party that do not have these same goals, but as a whole I think both parties are the same. Hmm… maybe these members of the two parties that have different intentions and ideas should branch off and form their own party. Somebody has to step up at some point and refuse to be a slave to one of the two parties… and it can’t be just one guy winning a single election. It’s doubtful it will ever happen, but wouldn’t it be awesome to see established democratic and republican congressmen, govenors, etc. form a new party?
Toot Toot!! that’s the sound of Matthew Zager tooting the third party horn!

Dear Marshall and Matthew,
The article is about the horrible state of the GOP, not the Democratic party. Read it again.

I completely agree with everything you just said.

And as I stated before, Maybe you should have done about the flawed aspects of our Two Party System. Not kicking one in the nuts because Keith Olberman said they’re buttholes.

Dear Marshall,
The article is about the Republican party… not politics, not Democrats, and not a flawed system. I urge you to read it again.
Love Danny Anus.
p.s. Who the fuck is Keith Olberman?

Sorry maybe that was a bit of a nut shot on my part. I have read it. I simply believe you’re not quite correct. Sorry

Okay butthole, let’s try this again.
Let’s take the Democrats out of this. You want a young, vibrant Republican to break the mold? The only way this is going to happen is if said person leaves the party and convinces other persons who currently hold public office to come with him to form a new party that can really change things. There is no reforming the Republican Party, it has worn itself out.

Right on bro, fantastic blog. It’d be great to have a Republican in there who wasn’t a total moron. Mccain like 7 years ago would’ve been pretty good, but now its just retarded. Your Dad would be proud of you!

Dear Marshall,
Its okay. I still love you. The article is more of what I see in the GOP, and how I want it to be better for my sake. It is not a hatchet job. I do not affiliate myself with any political party.
Love Danny Anus

I know, brother anus, i know. I almost want push non-voting. treat it like a boycott. I don’t see the benefit of this current electoral system, therefore I won’t abide by it and abstain.

Nice work Danny as usual. As a former Republican myself, within the last 8 years I have become so disillusioned and disgusted that I have fled the party, probably forever. I used to consider myself a social liberal and a fiscal conservative, but in 2008, conservative financial principles just don’t work. Why? Because people are evil. The people running the big companies do not operate in such a way that anyone benefits but them and their cronies. They have shown non-existent moral character and an abundance of greed. The idea of a “free market” sounds great but what freedom do people have when their retirements disappear overnight, their medical bills become un-manageable, and they can’t afford to pay their variable rate mortgage? When companies are un-regulated (or at least under-regulated) they deny the “better angels” and continue to foster an environment of greed and abuse. November 4th can’t get here quickly enough for me.
peace,
b.
